The Lake Lure Lions Club was chartered on March 26, 1979. Past International President (1989-1990) William L. (Bill) Woolard, who at that time was District Governor of District 31 - C, was the installing officer. While the local club, with about fifty members, is only a small part of the world's largest service club (over 1.4 million members in 185 countries), it strives to have a very positive impact on the community as well as on broader areas of service. It is often recognized as one of the most active Lions Clubs in North Carolina. The membership includes both men and women, including many husband/wife pairs.

Through its annual golf tournament on the second Friday of May, its weekly Tuesday bingo, March-December, "Candy Days" collections, counter mint and blind product sales, and other projects, the club currently collects and distributes to needy persons and worthy causes about $25,000 annually. In line with the international emphasis of Lionism, a large portion of this money goes towards programs to aid the blind and the hearing impaired. This includes providing eye examinations and eyeglasses for needy persons, purchasing large print books and audio tapes for the local library, contributing to eye research at major North Carolina medical centers, and contributing to the Lions International "Sight First" Program to help treat and prevent blindness throughout the world.

Local volunteer service organizations and youth programs are also supported by the Lake Lure Lions Club.
